My Top 5 Movies for 2019 – So Far

We’re at the halfway point of the year, and I thought I should start this new series here at GizmoGoblin, where I pick my top 5 best movies of the year so far.

For this list, we’re taking a look at the movies that are released till the second week of June, so, unfortunately, Toy Story 4 does not make the cut here.

5. Us

Actor Navdeep, Co Founder C Space Along With Rakesh Rudravanka – CEO – C Space

At no. 5, I pick US, even though I believe this movie falls apart after the Wilsons leave their neighbors home. But up until that point, Jordan Peele successfully blends horror and humor just as he did in “Get Out”. Especially the opening sequence is so good. Winston Duke is so so funny and Lupita Nyong’o puts forward an amazing performance. Each actor here does the dual performance superbly, but the MVP of the movie has to be Lupita Nyong’o who just shifts between empathetic and evil so effortlessly

4. Detective Pikachu

Hollywood is really trying to bridge the gap between east and west movies. This movie especially gives off the Anime vibe, particularly from Japan. While it hasn’t made a ton of money at the box office ($422 million globally), creatively it has impressed me a lot. The world building and VFX are amazing and as I said in my review of the movie, it is totally Blade Runner meets Roger Rabbits. Ryan Renolds, Justin Smith and Kathryn Newton all showcase a brilliant performance and the storyline in itself was intriguing enough to keep my attention till the end.

3. Aladdin

Aladdin is a huge box office success ($736 million Global), even though the trailers kinda made me nervous. But this live-action adaptation does full justice to the original animated version. And I want more of this, Disney should definitely be announcing a sequel to this movie. If you want you can look at my 3 wishes for the sequel of Aladdin. The cast and the movie are respectful of the middle-east and it is just an amazing feel-good movie and a total surprise in my opinion.

2. John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

John Wick franchise gets exponentially better with each movie. This movie has so expertly crafted action sequences that the Oscar is actually looking to add a stunt category to their awards list. The movie is a treat both visually and in terms of sound effect. I love the fact that Keanu Reeves is staying true to his brand even though John Wick 4 hasn’t even begun shooting yet.

1. Avengers Endgame

No surprises here. A culmination of a decade long storytelling and it was worth the wait. It even took down the only criticism that the MCU has had till date and that is they didn’t have a lasting stake and consequences. Well, that’s not the case anymore. It also makes room for the new favorites and every character is given their due and every storyline that the Infinity Saga has set up so far comes together. It’s a movie that’ll get you crying and cheering, sometimes both at the same time.

That’s the top 5 that I have picked for 2019 so far, with so many upcoming movies like Toy Story 4, Spiderman – Far from Home, The Lion King, IT Chapter 2, Frozen 2 and Star Wars to come this year, I certainly believe some of the movies in this list will change.
